Judiciary and Sustainability: contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals

Abstract

The ecological crisis presents a herculean challenge to the international community as a whole and individual countries. Actions to combat pollution and environmental degradation are required, with the potential to become effective protection of the environment, aiming at its balance, in order to produce safety and health for people. The 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals are a significant part of this action towards effective sustainable development, which comprises the connection and interdependence between the social, economic and ecological aspects. The Judiciary Branch plays an important role in achieving these goals, and precisely the ways in which it acts to achieve this purpose is the object of analysis of this study, which is divided into three parts: the destructive effects of anthropocentrism and the search for an ecological ethics; the model of the Ecological Rule of Law and its inherent duties, as well as the emergence of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs; the role of the Brazilian Judiciary in relation to the SDGs, as well as the ways in which has been realized. The study demonstrates that the performance of the Judiciary in relation to the SDGs, both at the administrative and jurisdictional levels, contributes to promoting sustainable development in the light of an environmental ethics that recognizes and qualifies the environment as deserving of adequate and compatible environmental protection. preservation of ecosystems for present and future generations.
