Environmental education in secondary schools in Rondônia: regulatory advances and challenges to its effective implementation

Abstract

Environmental Education is a fundamental instrument for promoting sustainability, environmental citizenship, and students’ critical development, especially in the Amazon, a region marked by rich biodiversity and significant socio-environmental challenges. This study examines the implementation of Environmental Education in public secondary schools in Rondônia, focusing on the contrast between normative advances and school practices. Its objective is to analyze the evolution of the legal framework, discuss implementation in the state context, and identify challenges and prospects associated with Law No. 14,926/2024. The research adopts a qualitative, bibliographic, and documentary approach, examining current legislation and scientific literature on Environmental Education through thematic categorization of the main barriers and possibilities for implementation. The findings indicate that insufficient teacher education, curriculum fragmentation, limited interdisciplinarity, lack of pedagogical resources, and weak monitoring policies contribute to isolated and discontinuous actions. The study concludes that effective Environmental Education in Rondônia requires permanent educational policies, stronger pre-service and continuing teacher education, integration of environmental issues into school pedagogical projects, and practices adapted to the socio-environmental specificities of the Amazon, grounded in a critical, interdisciplinary perspective committed to socio-environmental justice.
